PLATFORM EXTENSIONS – KETTERING STATION
Amey Rail
Enable Infrastructure was contracted by Amey Rail to extend the platform lengths at Kettering Station to accommodate new 240m trains following the implementation of a new timetable.
The project
As part of a broader endeavour to implement 25kV overhead line equipment (OLE) on the Bedford to Corby line, this project included the construction of an extra track to enhance capacity between Bedford and Kettering. This initiative formed a crucial part of the London to Corby electrification and capacity upgrade project.
The project encompassed the expansion of four platforms, with Enable Infrastructure overseeing the approved temporary works design and installation. Additionally, we were accountable for supplying all necessary labour, machinery, materials, equipment, and plant.
The challenge
- Most of the works had to be completed under planned possession access. Careful planning of the access periods therefore required, while we also had to ensure we provided the skilled and competent resource necessary.
- Need to ensure provision of skilled and competent resource, with particular resource challenges in weeks 36 and 39 of 2019, when over 380 people were needed at the same time to work on various Enable Infrastructure projects.
The solution
- With our vast expertise in possession planning and adherence to ISO9001-certified procedures, we collaborated closely with the client’s team throughout the planning phase. Our exceptional 10-week look-ahead process, renowned for its effectiveness, seamlessly incorporated possession planning and enabled us to accurately anticipate resource needs.
- Utilizing the entire process, we successfully assigned more than 55 individuals to contribute to the development of the Kettering platform extensions during weeks 36 and 39.
